What is Arbitrage Betting? The Complete 2026 Guide

Learn how sports arbitrage betting works, when the margin is truly locked in, and how to get started with real examples and step-by-step instructions.

What is Arbitrage Betting?

Arbitrage betting (also called "arbing" or "surebetting") is a strategy where you place bets on all possible outcomes of a sporting event across different sportsbooks, so that the combined payout exceeds the combined stake whichever side wins, as long as every bet is placed at the posted odds.

This works because different sportsbooks set their odds independently. When their odds disagree enough, an opportunity exists where the combined implied probability drops below 100%, creating a mathematical edge for you.

It is math, but it is still betting. The margin is locked in only if every leg is placed at the posted odds. Odds move, and books can limit, void or cancel bets, so arbitrage is low risk, not no risk.

How Does it Work? A Real Example

Let's say the Lakers are playing the Celtics:

Combined implied probability: 40% + 56.5% = 96.5%

Since 96.5% < 100%, this is a surebet. The remaining 3.5% is the margin you lock in if both bets are placed at these odds.

The Math

With a $1,000 bankroll:

If both bets are accepted at these prices, you profit about $35 whichever team wins. That is a 3.5% margin. If one price moves or a bet is voided before the other side is placed, you are left holding a normal bet.

Why Do Arbitrage Opportunities Exist?

Sportsbooks don't coordinate their odds. Each one uses their own models, reacts to different betting patterns, and adjusts at different speeds. This creates temporary price discrepancies that arbers can exploit.

Common reasons arbs appear:

How Much Can You Make?

Most arbs carry a margin of roughly 0.5% to 3% of the total stake. What that adds up to depends on how many you can place at the posted odds, the size of your bankroll, and whether your books keep accepting your bets. There is no fixed monthly return, and results vary from person to person.

Getting Started: Step by Step

1. Open Multiple Sportsbook Accounts

You need at least 2-3 books to start. More is better. Sign up at DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM, Caesars, Pinnacle, and Bet365 to maximize coverage.

2. Fund Your Accounts

Split your bankroll across your books. $200-500 is a reasonable starting point.

3. Find Arbitrage Opportunities

This is where a scanner saves you hundreds of hours. BetBot Picks scans 100+ sportsbooks every 5 minutes and delivers arb alerts directly to your Discord, for free.

4. Place Both Bets Quickly

Speed matters. Odds can change within minutes. When you see an alert:

  1. Open both sportsbooks
  2. Verify the odds still match
  3. Place both bets within 60 seconds
  4. Confirm and move on

5. Collect Your Profit

Wait for the event to finish. One bet wins and one loses. If both were accepted at the prices you calculated, your total payout exceeds your total stake.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Chasing moved odds: If the odds changed from the alert, skip it. Never force a bet.

Underfunding accounts: If you can't place the full recommended stake on both sides, the arb may not work.

Ignoring withdrawal requirements: Some books have wagering requirements on bonuses. Make sure you can withdraw.

Ignoring each book's rules: Only use books that are licensed where you live, and read each book's terms before you bet.

Is Arbitrage Betting Legal?

Betting at more than one licensed sportsbook is legal where sports betting is legal. Sportsbooks may still limit or close accounts that win consistently, including arbitrage accounts. Follow each book's terms of service.
