How to read betting odds

Odds tell you two things: what you win and how likely the book thinks it is. Once you can read both, every other guide gets easy.

Minus and plus

Minus odds (like -150) show how much you bet to win $100. Bet $150, win $100, get $250 back.

Plus odds (like +150) show how much a $100 bet wins. Bet $100, win $150, get $250 back.

The favorite has minus odds, the underdog has plus odds. Decimal odds (2.50) are simpler: multiply your stake by the number to get your total payout.

Odds are a win chance

Every price hides a percentage, called the implied probability. -150 means about 60%. +150 means 40%. That is the book saying how often it thinks the bet wins.

-200
66.7%
-110
52.4%
+100
50.0%
+200

Why it matters

A bet is only good if it wins more often than its price says. If a bet at +150 really wins 45% of the time, you are being paid for 40% and getting 45%. That gap is the whole game. Try a few prices in the converter below.
