Bet types: moneyline, spread, total, props and parlays

Most sportsbook menus come down to five kinds of bets. Here is each one in a sentence or two, with what to watch for.

Moneyline

Pick who wins. The favorite pays less, the underdog pays more.

Spread

The favorite has to win by more than the line. Chiefs -3.5 needs a 4 point win. The underdog at +3.5 wins the bet if it wins the game or loses by 3 or less. A whole number line (like -3) can land exactly, which is a push: you get your stake back.

Total (over/under)

Bet on the combined score. Over 47.5 needs 48 or more points from both teams.

Player props

Bets on one player's stats, like over 24.5 points. If the player does not play, most books void the bet and refund it. Read your book's rules, because some settle it as a loss once the game starts.

Parlays

Several bets in one. Every leg has to win, and the payout multiplies. Books love parlays because their cut multiplies too: a 4-leg parlay of -110 bets carries about four times the hold of a single bet. Use the calculator below to see the real chance every leg wins.
