When to hedge a bet

Hedging means betting the other side of a bet you already have, so you win something whoever wins. It is a tool, not always a good idea.

The math

You hold the Jets at +300 for $100. The other side is now -150. A hedge of $240 on the other side locks in about $60 whoever wins. The calculator below works it out for any price.

When it makes sense

When it does not

Hedging costs the vig on the second bet. Book cash out buttons usually price in an extra cut on top. If the amount is small next to your bankroll, letting the bet ride is usually worth more on average.
